Reviving Aleppo: The 1500 KW Cultural Revolution
From one of the halls of the Electricity Company in Aleppo, an ancient building that once stood as a symbol of the city’s industrial greatness has been brought back to life.
Today, through creativity and youthful determination, this historic structure—built in 1928—has been transformed into a vibrant hub of art, culture, and community. Thanks to the efforts of a group of talented young men and women, the ambitious cultural initiative “1500 Kilowatts” has breathed new life into the space, blending the echoes of the past with the energy of the present.
This unique exhibition brings vitality to an out-of-service building, turning its silent halls into spaces brimming with activity. As you wander through the exhibition, you’ll be immersed in a feast for the senses: traditional Aleppian dishes prepared by skilled hands, melodies of oriental music filling the air, and captivating artistic works that reflect the spirit of the city and its people. Shelves lined with handmade Aleppian products showcase the craftsmanship passed down through generations, highlighting the creativity and resilience of the community.
“1500 KW” is a vision for the future. It aims to rehabilitate abandoned spaces, transforming them into hubs of cultural and artistic expression. This project is a powerful reminder that young people are the architects of tomorrow, capable of reshaping their reality and turning aspirations into achievements.
The 1500 KW event is the first initiative by the Orshina Cultural Empowerment Group, founded just three months ago to preserve and celebrate local culture. The group is dedicated to safeguarding Aleppo’s heritage against the forces of globalization and countering the often misleading narratives promoted by international media.
The initiative runs for a month and a half, celebrating Aleppo’s rich identity through art, culture, heritage, and craftsmanship while uncovering the city’s hidden treasures and rekindling its vibrant spirit.
