Seven-year-old Sham Al-Bakour from Syria has captured hearts across the Arab world by winning the “Arab Reading Challenge” in its sixth season. Organized by the “Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Initiatives” in Dubai, this challenge saw over 22 million students from 44 countries participate, each eager to showcase their love for reading. But it was Sham, the youngest contestant, who stole the spotlight. Her fluent classical Arabic and inspiring story made waves on social media, with people sharing videos of her speaking confidently and with a maturity that belied her age.

The Arab Reading Challenge highlighted Sham’s journey in a video narrated by her mother, Manal Matar, who shared that Sham survived a devastating explosion in Aleppo. She sustained a head injury from shrapnel, losing her father in the same tragedy.
