Winter in Aleppo
At the beginning of winter and the snowfall, there were popular moments of fun and entertainment by making the familiar snowman and singing traditional folk songs that attracted hearts. In this cold and refreshing atmosphere, the Mother was preparing to make the delicious Suwaiq drink with warm aromatic herbs and pouring it on the melting snow to enjoy unforgettable warm and wintery moments.
In addition to these popular moments, winter snow had special meanings and connotations in the wardrobe of the customs and traditions of the rural people, as they emphasized that snowfall marked the end of the period of severe cold. They used to say, “Snow is the yeast of the earth,” expressing the ability of snow to nourish and improve the soil after melting, and there is a common saying that indicates the expectation of snowfall several times during the month of March.
This winter season also had special rituals in preparing food and heating, as they were keen to secure winter with all its needs, starting from firewood and coal to heating and preparing hot drinks.
On winter evenings, everyone would gather around the wood-burning stove, enjoying hot tea and delicious food such as Kasntna and Kibbeh or traditional Arabic sweets. Women would spend long hours knitting and tailoring, making clothes and quilts.
Despite the high costs of winter, it still brings warm and enjoyable memories, full of valuable social gatherings and communication. These winter nights remind us of times of comfort and solidarity with family and friends.
This is how the previous winter days were, full of tenderness, warmth and family gatherings. On the other hand, today we find ourselves facing economic challenges and bitter cold, which makes us miss those special times full of luxury and comfort. Let us remain grateful for our blessings and enjoy the beautiful moments and live them with joy and happiness.
